A week has passed since Yemen’s Iran-supported Houthi rebels advanced along the Red Sea coast, expanding their control to a crucial maritime passage and posing a threat to Saudi Arabia’s oil shipments. The Houthis' largest territorial takeover in years has reignited Yemen's 12-year civil war and caused a rise in global fuel prices. It also provided Iran with an additional possible means of influence as the United States began to ease Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthis are also targeting Saudi oil installations and tankers. An assault on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline, attributed to Iran-supported militias in Iraq, intensified the kingdom’s ongoing crisis and unsettled global markets. The rebel blitz has forced some 125,000 Yemenis to flee their homes. The civil war has killed over 150,000 people and at times pushed the country to the brink of famine. Now the rebels appear to be eyeing Yemen’s oil-rich east. Up to this point, the only obstacle in their path is Yemen’s Saudi-supported government along with various factions that have clashed as recently as January.
