All other guides on this focus on the A1200 or Workbench 2.0 and above, often surfing the World Wide Web. Not much fun to be had in getting old computers to browse new sites. Too painfully slow. But the Bulletin Board Systems are another story. They are fun to this day, and they're pretty damn awesome on the good old Amiga 500 running Workbench 1.3! The machine everyone has yet nobody seems to care about anymore. No A1200 guide to getting you online will help with your 500; Even 500 guides will not help with most 500's with kickstart 1.2 or 1.3 - But I will be bold enough to say my guide can get ALL Amiga's online, even the 1200.
And my guide is going to cost you nothing (most likely) or be very very cheap. Others make extra new (AKA Cost Money) hardware a primary part of their guide... But do you even see the magic in a BBS? Why should you pay good money or even a tiny bit of money when you can do it for free, and then figure out if you like it enough to pay for that new hardware?
In this guide you will need an Amiga, you will need a terminal program on the Amiga, I have found A-Talk III to be the best (and only one I could get to work), you will need a null modem cable (you probably already have one if you have an Amiga), and you will need a PC running the modem emulator TCPSER. The only thing that "might" cost money is the null modem cable if you don't already have one, and they're pretty cheap if you don't.
Try it out for yourself, I really recommend it... It was something else... I had so much fun on the BBS' and I think you can too. This video shows you how to do it every step of the way, and goes further by showing you the fun you're missing out on.
I also have a written guide on this topic (for the readers amongst you), but the two guides are both their own unique creation, I hope people will find enjoyment out of them both. The written guide as well as download links to the programs used here: http://shot97retro.blogspot.com/2017/...
