🛞 WHEN A TRAILER WHEEL DOESN’T WANT TO COME OFF…

Removing a wheel from a trailer sounds simple: take the lug nuts off and pull the wheel. But this job is a good example of why it doesn’t always work that way. The tire was already completely flat, and the wheels were stuck to the drum from rust, corrosion, and/or paint buildup between the mating surfaces. That combination makes removal a lot more difficult. 🔧 Why do trailer wheels get stuck? Over time, moisture, road salt, dirt and corrosion can build up between the wheels and around the hub. Paint buildup can also contribute to the surfaces essentially bonding together. Even after every lug nut is removed, the wheel can still feel like it’s attached to the truck. 🛞 Now add a flat tire… A flat tire makes the situation even harder because you lose the tire’s normal shape and clearance. Instead of having a firm inflated tire and wheel assembly to work with, the sidewall collapses making it difficult to pull wheel off. This is why I had to hit the inner rim from behind and use penetration spray to remove the wheel from the drum. That means sometimes the hardest part of a tire change isn’t changing the tire at all… It’s getting the wheel off the trailer. ⚠️ TECH TIP: Never assume a wheel is going to come off easily. Put penetration oil on the drum and studs before starting to work. Commercial tire work isn’t always about having more strength. It’s about understanding what is holding something in place and figuring out the safest and smoothest way to overcome it.
