Ilbirs Baskan Toolordo | Where the Ilbirs Walks | Kyrgyz Snow Leopard Song | JollyGul

Created in recognition of International Snow Leopard Day, observed on October 23, this Kyrgyz heritage song celebrates the ilbirs—the elusive snow leopard of Central Asia—and the mountain communities working to protect its future. A young Kyrgyz shepherd discovers snow-leopard tracks in the Tian Shan mountains and learns from his grandmother that the elusive ilbirs is part of the mountain’s living balance. When the family’s livestock enclosure is damaged, the community chooses protection and coexistence instead of retaliation—strengthening the corral and working with wildlife rangers to preserve the leopard’s hidden pathways. Blending Kyrgyz musical heritage with a conservation message, Where the Ilbirs Walks reminds us that we do not need to possess—or even see—something to value and protect it. If the ilbirs can still cross the snow, the mountain is still alive.
