How fast is Usain Bolt really? Use his 9.58 s world record to learn speed, average speed and distance-time graphs for Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 and O Level. Bolt’s top speed is about 44 km/h, but his average speed over the 100 m is lower. In this lesson, you’ll use the real split times from his 2009 Berlin race to plot a distance-time graph, find the gradient, calculate speed. It’s a great example of how physics explains the real world. Key equations Speed = distance ÷ time Gradient of a distance-time graph = speed Chapters 0:00 Is Usain Bolt really 44 km/h? 0:30 The 9.58 s world record data 0:45 Gradient= Speed 1:30 Tangent Line 2:20 Speed at 3 seconds 4:30 Speed at 6 seconds 9:40 Average Speed 10:10 Recap Data source: split times from the 2009 World Championships in Athletics biomechanics report (IAAF/World Athletics).
