It's time for this months newest Backstage Dia...
Wait a minute...
What's going on here? Why am I featuring this month's new Gold fighter rather than the Diamond One? And why a Valentine fighter of all things, given I've stated she is my least favorite Skullgirls Character?
This time around, both this month's newest fighters both bring unique mechanics to the table; and upon recruiting Lovesick in the first area and having also managed to actually get Lovesick immediately after the update dropped, I decided to record anyways with the hope to also recruit this months Diamond Fighter, Garish Gremlin, and feature both at once. This didn't go to plan, as I didn't recruit her, and given that things wrap up midway through area two, you can probably guess what also happened.
So what does Lovesick Valentine bring to the table that contributes to this special privilege? Off the top of my head, her Signature Ability, Knight's Devotion, works similarly to Materia Girl Annie's via the new mechanic it revolves around; Devotion.
The ability's first part sets the stage. Lovesick gains Devotion every three seconds and after every five combo hits, being able to stack up to seven. Once she gains seven of them, she becomes empowered for fifteen seconds, gaining an assortment of unpreventable buffs; three stacks of Enrage, three stacks of Miasma, and Haste. Once her empowered state ends, she gains cripple for ten seconds which also prevents the gaining of Devotion; an idea reminiscent of another Annie fighter's Signature Ability; Solar Flair.
Going back to Materia Girl, the comparison should make some sense; both have meters that fill up passively and via landing hits, gain buffs and Blockbuster Meter once full that last until the meter is empty, and have cooldown mechanisms in place. Of course there are obvious slight differences between the specific mechanics and the characters that I won't break down here.
But remember, Materia Girl gets her 'empowered state' as her Signature Ability's second part; but Lovesick gets hers right away. So what could the second part possibly offer? The Enrage stacks from part one already gave her an attack boost, but the second part takes a step further; every four seconds she is empowered, Lovesick's attack increases by 15%, which wears off once she is no longer empowered. Furthermore, every seven combo hit gives her an extra second of empowerment; which let's her deal even more damage. This is loosely reminiscent to how Materia Girl, as an Annie, can prematurely cancel Star Power to reduce or avoid the cooldown outright to potentially prolong Limit Break's (her Signature Ability) influence.
But without question, Knight's Devotion beats Limit Break every day of the weak; providing a comparable amount of Blockbuster Meter an absurd amount of increased damage, especially if you know Valentine's combos that will let you squeeze in those extra seconds of empowerment. Her Cripple penalty can also easily be bypassed via Immunity, supporting fighters' Signature Abilities, and Resistance; which ensures she never loses momentum. But even if she does get crippled, if she has the ICU Marquee Ability, that's a free Heavy Regen; which can snowball into her Prestige Ability to further increase her health recovery. And again, the empowerment Miasma also gives her health. To conclude, this fighter is a strong pick (almost on par with Nail Biter IMO) who can deal and heal a ton of damage. Luckily, her Gold rarity will make her easier to obtain; so most won't have to get lovesick over this fighter for long.
