First, never follow the lights into the swamp. Second, never ask what is in the house stew. Third, if a ghost offers to carry your luggage, let her. The inn was built long ago by a witch who grew tired of lost travelers knocking on her cottage door. She installed a great hearth, raised a proper bar, and announced that henceforth anyone seeking shelter must at least purchase a drink. Business flourished. Unfortunately, the swamp had other ideas. The wandering lights kept leading guests astray. The witch complained that the marsh was stealing her customers. So she enchanted three little bells, one for each path through the mire, to guide travelers safely home. When the witch finally passed beyond the veil, three former regulars volunteered to watch over the inn. They were, admittedly, already ghosts. One keeps an eye on the entrance. One checks the grounds near the hearth. And the third seems to wander wherever she pleases. Nobody has ever successfully assigned that last one a shift. Together they make certain that lost travelers find the lights of the tavern rather than the deeper waters of the mire. The innkeeper insists they're excellent employees. They never ask for wages, never eat the food, and can pass through locked doors when someone forgets a key. There is just one difficulty. They have a habit of appearing suddenly beside the guests. This has resulted in several overturned drinks, two shattered plates, and one knight abandoning an entire suit of armor. The armor is still in the storeroom. It appears to be haunted now, too. As for the violet and teal wisps dancing through the trees, the keeper swears they are harmless. He also swears the stew is beef. Neither statement has been independently confirmed. Still, the lanterns shine, the hearth burns, and the doors remain open to any traveler brave enough to cross the marsh. Welcome to The Black Mire Inn & Tavern. Mind the water. Keep your mug close.
