In Episode 3 of our Ferrari F355 restoration project, it's time for one of the biggest jobs so far — dropping the engine and investigating exactly what condition it's in.
When we bought this Ferrari 355 F1 Berlinetta, the car was partly dismantled, with missing components, boxes of parts and very little certainty about the mechanical condition. We didn't even know whether the V8 engine would turn over.
With the engine out, we can finally start getting some answers.
In this episode:
1. We remove the Ferrari 355's V8 engine and subframe assembly.
2. Investigate the condition of the engine after almost 20 years off the road.
3. Carry out a detailed visual and mechanical inspection.
4. Give the neglected interior its first proper clean.
Could our bargain Ferrari actually have a surprisingly healthy engine? Or are we just uncovering the beginning of a much bigger restoration project?
The aim is to bring this neglected Ferrari back to life, doing as much of the work ourselves as possible, while documenting the real costs, problems and discoveries along the way.
If you enjoy Ferrari restorations, classic car rebuilds, DIY mechanical work and the reality of owning old Italian supercars, subscribe and follow the project.
