Kilchurn Castle One of the most spectacular and recognisable castles we visited during our journey through Scotland. 🏰🏴 Standing dramatically on the shores of Loch Awe, Kilchurn Castle is beautifully surrounded by water, mountains and the vast landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. Originally built in the mid-15th century by Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy, the castle remained a powerful Campbell stronghold for around 150 years. Over the centuries, Kilchurn changed from a family fortress into a military garrison. After the Jacobite Rising of 1689, barracks were added to accommodate up to 200 soldiers. These are now considered the oldest surviving barracks on the British mainland. The castle was eventually abandoned in the 18th century, leaving behind the atmospheric ruins we see today. What makes Kilchurn Castle so special is its incredible location. It originally stood on a small island in Loch Awe, although changes to the water level eventually connected it to the shore. Today, the ruined castle remains one of the most photographed in Scotland — and it is easy to understand why. Seeing it from above gave us an even better view of the castle, Loch Awe and the dramatic mountains surrounding it. The combination of history, nature and the sheer scale of the landscape made this one of the most beautiful drone locations of our entire Scottish road trip. Oh and don't forget the highland cow! #dji #drone #dronevideo #scotland #castle #djimini4pro
