Rani (Age 28) – (Showing courage) Not yet. (Gripping the wooden plank) Come on, everyone, get onto this.
Ram (Age 32) – (Helping the children up) Rani, keep holding it just like this; don't let go. Kids, go ahead.
(Ram helps the children climb onto it)
Ram (Age 32) – (Panicked) Mom, Neema, give me your hands. Don't step into the water; just hold onto this plank and stand.
Narration – Ram helped everyone get into position; they all tried to stay afloat by holding onto the floating plank, but...
Vimala (Age 70) – (Panicked) Daughter-in-law, why is this plank shaking?
Rani (Age 28) – (Looking closely) What did you say, Grandma? It’s shaking?
Sumitra (Age 50) – (Panicked) I think it’s sinking because there’s too much weight on it, daughter-in-law. Neema (22) - (Screaming) Ah... Ma, we're going under the water.
(The plank sinks)
Dinesh (55) - (Flailing as he sinks) Ah... ah... help, help!
Ram (32) - (Instructing) Everyone hold hands. Everyone. Rani, hold my hand.
Rani (28) - (Sinking) Ram-ji, Ram-ji... ah... hold on... Ram-ji. (Grabbing the wood) Ah... it's coming back up.
(Everyone regains their grip on the wood)
Pinky (5) - (Crying) Ma, hold me; the water is pulling me in. Ah... Ma, Ma, Ma.
Raju (8) - (Sinking) Baba, I'm drowning.
Ram (32) - (Panicked) Raju, my child! (Speaking to everyone) Everyone, form a chain with your hands. Raju, I'm coming.
Vimla (70) - (Helping form the chain) That's right... hurry, everyone hold hands... my Raju.
Ram (32) - (After the chain is formed, he goes into the water and grabs Raju) Ah... ah...
Raju (8) - (Losing consciousness) Ah... Baba... Ma...
Rani (28) - (Crying) Raju, Raju... what happened to my child? Lay him down here, Ram-ji. Raju. (Ram lays Raju down on a wooden plank, but he begins to sink again.)
Sumitra (Age 50) - (Groaning in panic) Ahhh... what is happening? Daughter-in-law, we won't survive this.
Neema (Age 22) - (Weeping) I’ll just drown myself in the water; it’s better to die once and for all than to die a little every moment like this.
Rani (Age 28) - (Stopping her, shouting) No, no, no, Neema—absolutely not. You mustn't do that.
Dinesh (Age 55) - (Weeping) If we don't do it ourselves, nature will do it to us, daughter-in-law. Remember, no one is coming to save us from this flood. Just look at each other's faces one last time—we don't know where we might meet again. Goodbye.
Narration - Hearing Dinesh's words, everyone burst into tears. In the solitude of the night, amidst the floodwaters, they could clearly see their impending deaths. They wept as they gazed at one another. But the question remains: how had this poor family managed to survive such a devastating flood? Had everyone else perished? Or was there something else at play? Would they survive, or would this calamity claim their lives? To find out, let’s step back in time a little.
Main Story Begins
(Scene: Rani's house; it is about to rain.)
Rani (Age 28) - (Anxiously) Oh no, Mother-in-law, it looks like it’s going to rain again.
Neema (Age 22) - (Anxiously) The floor had finally dried with such difficulty, *Bhabhi*—and now it’s going to rain again?
Pinky (Age 5) - (Happily) Yay! Look at those dark, heavy clouds gathering, Ma—it’s going to pour.
Rani (Age 28) - (Anxiously) Oh child, please don't even mention the rain.
Raju (Age...) 8 - (Making a face) Why wouldn't I? Mom, just the mention of rain makes me happy. Don't you remember, Mom? You promised that the next time it rained, you’d make pakoras for us. Don't forget your promise.
Rani, age 28 - (Listening) Did I say something like that? (Thinking) Yes, I did say it, but there’s nothing in the house. Pakoras can't be made out of thin air; we have to wait for Ram-ji to return—only after he brings supplies can we cook a proper meal.
(It starts to rain, and raindrops begin to fall inside the house.)
Vimla, age 70 - (Worriedly) Oh no, the wretched rain has started. Daughter-in-law, quickly gather up the belongings.
Rani, age 28 - (Worriedly) Grandma, where should I put the things? Apart from the corner with the stove, there isn't a single spot in the house where we can safely keep anything.
