Episode 10 — "More Than a Cane or a Guide Dog | Fear, Freedom & Finding Independence"
“I will, for some reason, act more blind than I am.”
Why would someone with vision loss feel the need to appear more blind when other people are watching?
And how can something as simple as a white cane or a guide dog completely change someone's life?
In this episode of Central Vision Podcast, Austin and Charity welcome special guest Melissa Carr for an honest, funny, and eye-opening conversation about orientation and mobility (O&M) training, guide dogs, independence, and everything that comes with learning to navigate the world differently.
Charity and Melissa have both experienced cane and guide dog training. Austin hasn't experienced either, and he's asking the questions many people might not know to ask.
But this isn't a technical lesson about canes or dogs. It's about the experience itself, from recognizing when you might need these tools to discovering what life looks like once you have them.
Melissa shares how she spent years living with progressive vision loss without realizing she could even use a white cane.
“I don't think I'm allowed to use a cane yet. I'm not blind.”
Charity had a different experience. After years of using guide dogs, the thought of using a cane felt like taking a step backward. She worried about how others would see her and struggled with what that change meant for her identity.
Both eventually discovered that the experiences they initially resisted could become some of the most empowering of their lives.
But getting there wasn't always easy.
From the emotional first days of training to the unexpected challenges of bringing home a guide dog, Charity and Melissa share what surprised them, what frustrated them, and what they wish they'd known beforehand.
You'll hear about:
• Knowing when you're ready for cane or guide dog training
• Feeling like you're not “blind enough” to use a cane
• The fears, emotions, and expectations surrounding training
• What actually happens during O&M and guide dog training
• How guide dogs are matched with their handlers
• Why bringing a guide dog home is only the beginning
• The friendships and community that can make training life-changing
• Finding confidence and independence in unexpected ways
And there's plenty of laughter along the way, with unexpected stories, friendly disagreements, and a few moments that prove learning something new doesn't always go according to plan.
But beyond the training is a conversation about something nearly everyone can relate to: facing unfamiliar experiences, worrying about how others perceive us, and discovering that something intimidating can ultimately change our lives for the better.
Because independence isn't always about doing everything alone. Sometimes it's about discovering what makes more possible.
Whether you're considering mobility training, curious about guide dogs, experiencing vision loss, or simply interested in hearing three different perspectives, this episode offers plenty to think about.
Sometimes the biggest step toward freedom is taking the one you've been putting off.
