Quorum sensing is a cell-to-cell communication process that allows bacteria to detect and respond to population density by regulating gene expression.
How It Works
•Autoinducers: Bacteria release small signaling molecules called autoinducers into their environment
Density Tracking: As the bacterial population grows, the concentration of these molecules increases.
Threshold Trigger: When the autoinducer concentration reaches a critical threshold (a "quorum"), it binds to specific cellular receptors and triggers coordinated group behaviors.
Differences Between Bacteria Types
• Gram-Negative Bacteria: Typically use chemical signals called acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs).
•Gram-Positive Bacteria: Typically use modified oligopeptides (autoinducing peptides) as signals.
Coordinated Group Behaviors
• Biofilm Formation: Creating sticky, protective layers of cells on surfaces (like dental plaque)
Virulence: Synchronizing the release of toxins or enzymes to overwhelm a host's immune system.
