What does code-switching really cost Black women?
In this episode of Blaque Noire, I explore the truth about code-switching as a Black woman — not only changing the way we speak, but constantly managing our tone, facial expressions, emotions and identity so that we are not misunderstood in predominantly white workplaces and wider society.
I share my own experience of growing up in a predominantly white area, feeling different, unattractive and less understood, before entering workplaces where I became increasingly conscious of how I spoke, disagreed and presented myself. We talk about the angry Black woman stereotype, the fear of being labelled aggressive, ghetto, intimidating or difficult, and the emotional labour involved in making ourselves easier for other people to receive.
This conversation also looks at what happens when code-switching becomes automatic. Can a valuable survival skill slowly become self-erasure? What is the impact on confidence, self-trust, mental wellbeing, professional identity and our ability to feel fully known?
This is an honest discussion for Black women who have ever felt they needed to arrive in a room already edited.
