A Beautiful Stone Village That Feels Frozen in Time | Lofou, Cyprus 🇨🇾

There is another side of Cyprus that many visitors never see. Away from the beaches and busy coastal resorts, traditional stone villages still sit quietly among the hills. Lofou is one of them. Sitting around 780 metres above sea level, Lofou is a traditional village in the Limassol district, about 26 km from the city. Its name comes from the Greek word lofos, meaning “hill”, and the name has been preserved since Byzantine times. The village is known for its winding cobblestone lanes, old stone houses, wooden doors and quiet courtyards. Vineyards and almond trees surround the village, creating a rural landscape far removed from the coastal Cyprus most visitors know. Lofou still preserves traces of everyday village life from earlier generations. The traditional Elitji fountain dates back to 1842 and was once an important place where villagers collected their water. The village is also home to a small agricultural museum and a 19th-century church dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.
