In 1977, a young trader in Kano started a
business with a family loan worth about three
thousand US dollars. Nearly fifty years later,
the refinery he built on the Lekki coast of
Lagos can process six hundred and fifty
thousand barrels of crude a day, and Nigeria
has become a net exporter of petrol for the
first time in fifty years.
This is the story of Aliko Dangote and Dangote
Group: a trading house descended from
Alhassan Dantata; the cement imports of
Nigeria's first oil boom; the 2002 policy that
turned an importer into a manufacturer at
Obajana; the listing of Dangote Cement in
2010; the twenty-billion-dollar refinery bet
and the fight with NNPC over crude supply.
New for the film: The Kenya Listing. The
refinery's share sale opened on the Nigerian
Exchange on 14 September 2026, and on 29
September in Nairobi, Aliko Dangote pledged
that his planned East African refinery at Lamu
will be listed on the Nairobi Securities
Exchange.
