Seeing a red flag is one thing. Leaving a relationship after recognising it is something else.
In Episode 05 of Beyond the Narrative, Counselling Psychologist Nidhi Pandey and ICHARS CEO Nitin Shah explore what relationship “red flags” actually mean, why not every uncomfortable behaviour should be labelled a red flag, and why people may continue to stay even after recognising unhealthy patterns.
The conversation looks at the psychological, emotional, and practical factors that can make leaving difficult—including hope that a partner will change, attachment, fear of being alone, embarrassment, financial dependence, family pressure, children, and rationalising harmful behaviour.
In this episode, we discuss:
What actually counts as a relationship red flag
Why repetitive and unsafe patterns matter
Why people stay despite recognising red flags
Hope, attachment, fear, and dependence
How rationalisation and self-blame can affect decisions
Why recognising an unhealthy relationship and leaving it are different psychological processes
What trauma bonding means in the context discussed
Why casually using psychological labels can be misleading
Why telling someone to “just leave” may not address their reality
How friends and family can offer meaningful support
What therapy can and cannot do in these situations
Practical first steps when someone feels exhausted by a relationship
The episode also explores an important distinction: recognising that a relationship is unhealthy does not automatically mean someone is psychologically ready or practically able to leave it.
