For more than a hundred years, almost every freight train in North America ended with a little house on wheels: the caboose. Then, in less than ten years, it was gone. It wasn't banned — in some states it was required by law, and it took a federal court to end it. This is the story of the caboose: what the crew at the back actually did, the $4,000 box that took their job, the 1982 labor deal, Montana's 1983 caboose law, the 1989 Ninth Circuit ruling on federal preemption, the 1994 Cajon Pass collision that forced a fix, and the fight over train crew size that is still going on today.
