Every February, the last plane leaves Antarctica. And roughly one thousand people watch it go — knowing they cannot follow.
For the next eight months, there is no way in and no way out. The seas freeze. The runways disappear. The temperatures drop low enough that exposed skin freezes in under a minute. And the sun vanishes entirely for six months straight.
These are not explorers passing through. They are the mechanics, cooks, scientists, and engineers who choose — voluntarily — to spend the long Antarctic winter at the most isolated research stations on earth. McMurdo. Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Rothera. Places where the community is everything, the darkness is real, and the aurora australis fills the sky on the clearest nights with a light that exists nowhere else.
This is what life actually looks like at the bottom of the world.
A cinematic 4K documentary by The Map.
