American Football has been a band for about 30 years now, but they have a really interesting history. Mike Kinsella, Steve Holmes and the rest of the band first got together when they were in college. They played a handful of shows and recorded one album in that time before breaking up. Years later, the fanbase for the album grew to the point where the band got back together That first reunion happened 15 years ago, and now American Football have just released their fourth full length album, simply titled: American Football (LP4). We chat with Mike and Steve about their early years playing music and high school and who they eventually came to cutting a record. They also tell us what it was like to tour together again after a 15 year hiatus and what eventually happened to the house that they have pictured on the cover of their debut album. 00:00 Intro 00:18 What was the band like when they were teens? 02:12 The punk rock scene when they were growing up 03:27 How they settled on a softer and math rock sound 06:53 The story of the bands revival a decade after they released a record 09:22 When they noticed the band was bigger than they every imagined 12:44 How American Football influenced other big popular emo bands 18:46 Do teenage emotions still run high in middle age? 21:29 Navigating the band and being adults, for Steve that means having a corporate job 25:07 Co-owning the house on the cover of their first record 28:59 Outro Want to hear more?
