VP Hall, constructed in 1887 by T Namberumal Chetty as per the design of RF Chisholm commemorated Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee. The Maharajah of Vizianagaram donated money to make it a reality. It soon became Chennai’s Town Hall and the venue for many innovations and path breaking moves in theatre, cinema, culture, politics and sports. Victoria Public Hall remains a vibrant testament to the city’s civic consciousness and cultural journey. Once a hub for reformers, artists, and the public, it now reopens after restoration as a space celebrating Chennai’s rich heritage. Walk through its doors to experience the seamless coming together of history, architecture, and community. Sriram V takes you through its history.
