A book written by hand on parchment. Plants no one has securely identified, circles of stars, figures in pools… and on every page a script no one has managed to read. For more than a century, people have announced that it was finally deciphered. None of those proposals has convinced specialists. In this case we separate what has been measured (the parchment, the ink, the old letters) from what has been proposed. We go through the attempts to read it, from the "microscopic letters" of 1921 to the proposals of 2018 and 2019; Lindemann and Bowern's statistical analysis; the five hands identified by Lisa Fagin Davis; and Michael Greshko's Naibbe system (2025), which reproduces certain properties of the text but does not decipher the manuscript. And we end with the question of the case: what would a translation have to prove to be believable?
