Deep in the Taihang Mountains of Shanxi, China, a spectacular cliff road leads toward one of the region’s most unusual mountain villages — Yuejiazhai This drive begins along the high mountain roads of the Taihang region and continues toward Yuejiazhai, following a dramatic route carved through towering cliffs, deep valleys and rock tunnels. The road runs directly alongside massive vertical rock walls, with steep mountain slopes and deep gorges opening on the opposite side. At several points, the route passes beneath overhanging cliffs and through tunnels cut directly into the mountain — a style of road closely associated with the rugged landscape of the Taihang Mountains. At the end of this extraordinary mountain drive lies Yuejiazhai, formerly known as Xiashihao Village (下石壕村), in Pingshun County, Changzhi, Shanxi Province. Local tradition also connects Yuejiazhai with descendants of Yue Fei, the famous Southern Song dynasty general.
