Why Did Our Shower Fail Its First Water Test?

Our DIY shower turns red—and the first water test fails! Follow our RedGard waterproofing, drain trouble, and overnight shower pan test before tiling. This week’s bathroom remodel has us seeing RED! I’m tackling RedGard shower waterproofing for the first time, starting with wiping down the cement board and working around the corners and shower niche. Between multiple coats, drying time, Florida heat, and a work light with a mind of its own, this project is testing my patience. Then comes the moment of truth: will it hold water? With a brush, sponge, bucket, and drain test plug in the mix, we work through drain-area gaps that derail the first test, add more RedGard, and fill the shower pan for an overnight check. Along the way, I spot what looks like a crack and share the very real mess that comes with living through a DIY bathroom renovation. After about 14 hours, I share where the water level stands, pull the plug, and check whether the shower floor drains without leaving pools behind. This is our firsthand renovation experience, complete with questions, setbacks, and small victories as we work toward tile.
