A widow wore dead black crape for a year and a day, and close to 2 years in all before she was allowed back into color. A married woman, on her wedding morning, all but ceased to exist in the eyes of the law. By 1891 more than a million people were in domestic service in England and Wales, most of them expected never to be seen.
