🎙️ Someone You Should Meet | Jeff Zulman – Founder & Managing Director of TrailBlazer Finance
From Goldman Sachs and Wall Street to entrepreneurship, mortgage broking, business turnarounds and building one of Australia's leading specialist finance businesses, Jeff Zulman's career has been anything but conventional.
In this episode of Someone You Should Meet, Daniel, Jesse and Rex sit down with Jeff Zulman, Founder and Managing Director of TrailBlazer Finance, for a conversation about business, risk, resilience, partnerships and the lessons that only come from decades of experience.
Born and raised in South Africa, Jeff grew up surrounded by strong influences. His father went on to become a High Court judge, while his grandparents arrived in South Africa with very little and built a successful clothing business from the ground up. From an early age, Jeff developed a fascination with buying, selling and finding opportunities, a mindset that would eventually shape much of his career.
After studying in South Africa and at Oxford University, Jeff entered the world of investment banking, joining Goldman Sachs and spending time on Wall Street before moving into wealth management in London.
But corporate finance was only the beginning.
After relocating to Australia, Jeff began spotting opportunities of his own. He built a mail-order business by recognising a gap in the Australian market, overcoming consumer distrust by partnering with established organisations and ultimately growing the business to tens of thousands of customers before selling it.
His career would go on to include corporate advisory, software, business turnarounds and some extraordinarily difficult lessons about choosing the right people to go into business with. Jeff recounts one particularly challenging experience involving a software company, financial problems hidden beneath the surface and a situation serious enough that he personally stepped in to ensure employees were paid.
Those experiences reinforced lessons that Jeff continues to live by today: do your due diligence, understand who you're getting into business with and make sure your partners are genuinely aligned.
The conversation then moves into mortgage broking, where Jeff became the inaugural CEO of Vow Financial and gained a front-row seat to the extraordinary evolution of Australia's broker market.
It was there that he identified another opportunity.
Jeff saw successful mortgage brokers building valuable recurring trail commission books but struggling to access traditional business finance because banks generally preferred tangible assets as security. That gap became the foundation for what would eventually become TrailBlazer Finance.
Jeff shares how he backed the idea with his own money, why he believed recurring revenue could be treated as a genuine business asset and how TrailBlazer grew into a specialist funder, valuer and facilitator for Australia's finance broking industry.
But Jeff's story extends far beyond finance.
He talks about property ventures in the United States, his time serving in local government in Sydney and his approach to giving back as he reaches another major milestone in life.
To mark turning 60, Jeff created his "6 for 60" challenge, a series of physically demanding charity events around the world supporting causes close to him. From cycling through Israel alongside disabled veterans and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to endurance swimming off the Italian coast, Jeff is proving that his appetite for a challenge hasn't disappeared.
Throughout the episode, Jeff shares the business principles that have stayed with him across industries and continents: strategy means very little without execution, partnerships can make or break a business, and proper due diligence should never be sacrificed because an opportunity looks exciting.
It's a conversation spanning Wall Street, entrepreneurship, finance, business failures and successes, calculated risk, philanthropy and the experiences that shape the way you see business.
