She told a bank lobby full of strangers that I never paid a dime on the family house, and
then she slid me the pen. This is a family inheritance story about a deed, a signature,
and what my grandmother put in writing in 1994.
I am a title clerk. For eleven years I have read other people's deeds for a living — every
lien, every easement, every line of a sixty-year search — and in all that time I had never
once pulled my own family's. My mother asked me to meet her at the bank on a Thursday
afternoon to sign one page so the property title would be clean before a gas company paid
anybody. My brother was going to get the house. I signed it. I did not argue, and I did not
raise my voice, and I did not tell her what I had been doing quietly for nine years.
Nine days later a man in a white truck parked in front of that house with a folder under his
arm, and there was a page in that folder with my name on it.
This is a story about an estate, a quitclaim deed, a will nobody finished reading, and a
family that spent thirty years arguing over the roof.
