Check In at Cap Karoso: A Journey Through Sumba’s Soul

We’re kicking off our new series, Check In, where we visit the places that inspire us — spaces where design, art, and culture come together in unforgettable ways. In this first episode, we travel to the remote west coast of Sumba, Indonesia, to visit Cap Karoso — a beachside luxury resort that feels like a creative sanctuary. Surrounded by raw natural beauty, Cap Karoso is a meeting point for artists, thinkers, and travellers who want to slow down and connect. During our stay, we met Jake Paul White, a contemporary abstract artist from the UK, who was invited to join Cap Karoso’s artist residency. Known for working with natural pigments, Jake came to Sumba to reconnect with ancient materials and find new meaning in his practice. His time on the island became a deep, personal exchange — with the land, the people, and the stories that live on through Sumba’s craft traditions. 🔹 What we loved most about Cap Karoso: Modernist clean, sculptural lines constructed from raw concrete are softened with local stone, timber, and woven materials The buildings are nestled into the landscape with green roofs, native planting, and wide overhangs to naturally cool the spaces Terrazzo floors, handcrafted teak furniture, and ikat textiles create a palette of earth tones and soft neutrals The artist-in-residence program, rooted in collaboration and community Thoughtful design that celebrates Sumba’s culture This is one of those places that leaves a mark — on the mind, on the heart, and, in Jake’s case, on the canvas. 👇 Let us know what part of this story stayed with you. 📍Location: Cap Karoso, West Sumba, Indonesia 🎨 Artist: Jake Paul White Filmed by: Bali Interiors This episode of A Peek In Paradise is brought to you by Cap Karoso.
