Cap à l'est, vers le Montana. Pour nous poser à Fish Lake, (Idaho County), une piste en herbe isolée gérée par le service des forêts américain (USFS), située dans les montagnes de la forêt nationale de Nez Perce-Clearwater, au cœur de la zone sauvage (wilderness) de Selway-Bitterroot en Idaho. L'expédition de Lewis et Clark : Lewis et Clark ont rencontré les Nez Percés pour la première fois, en septembre 1805, épuisés et affamés après avoir traversé les Bitterroot Mountains par le Lolo Trail. Les Nez Percés les ont nourris (camas, saumon séché), leur ont sauvé la vie, et la relation cordiale qui s'est nouée là a duré près de 70 ans — jusqu'à la guerre Nez Percé de 1877... Il m'était impossible d'ignorer toute l'histoire humaine et culturelle derrière ces paysages magnifique. Hommage simple, à 12:20 : "Ground Beneath the Wings" Engine hums a steady drone, Below me, canyons cut in stone. Nez Perce trails still run this land, Older than the strip where I'll land. Shoshone fires once lit this dark, Long before the runway's mark. I fly this ridge, I know its name, But the ridge was here before the plane. I hear it in the engine's beat, A rhythm older than my seat, A pulse the canyon walls still keep — I'm just passing through their sleep. No war, no ghosts, no borrowed drum, Just a debt I carry, quiet, and dumb. The land remembers what I forget, I fly it slow, I fly it with respect. Every ridge has got a story older than mine, Every river ran here long before the flight line. I don't claim to know it, I just fly it low and true, And try to leave it better than I found it, passing through.
