Join me on a backpacking journey deep into the Grand Canyon, starting at the South Rim and descending the historic South Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground. This was Day 1 of my Grand Canyon backpacking trip in April 2026. Over 8 miles, I descended nearly 4,800 feet from the South Kaibab Trailhead, passing Cedar Ridge, Skeleton Point, The Tipoff, and the Colorado River before reaching Phantom Ranch. Along the way, I encountered one of the most iconic sights in the Grand Canyon — a Mule Train making its way along the narrow trail. With no roads reaching the inner canyon, mule trains have played an important role in transporting people and supplies through the canyon for generations. I also stopped at Phantom Ranch for a lemonade before continuing to Bright Angel Campground, where I spent the night beneath the South Rim. Beyond the scenery, this trail has a fascinating history. The South Kaibab Trail was constructed in the 1920s as an alternative route into the canyon, providing access to the Colorado River and Phantom Ranch. Today, the trail still follows much of that historic route, connecting the South Rim with the inner canyon. This was only the first day. The next part of the journey continues across the Tonto Trail before climbing back to the South Rim via Bright Angel Trail. 🏜️ Grand Canyon National Park 🥾 South Kaibab Trail → Phantom Ranch ⛺ Bright Angel Campground 📅 April 2026 📍 Arizona, USA #GrandCanyon #GrandCanyonNationalPark #SouthKaibab #PhantomRanch #Backpacking #Hiking #Arizona #NationalParks #SouthKaibabTrail
