The Battle of Five Armies Commander Decks | Hobbit MTG

Fight the Battle of Five Armies through Magic: The Gathering Commander decks! In this episode of Ultimate Deckcrafting with Magic: The Gathering, we bring the climactic battle of The Hobbit to the tabletop through five story-driven Commander decks, each representing the characters, factions, and forces that converge upon the Lonely Mountain. A Thief in the Night follows Bilbo’s remarkable journey from reluctant adventurer to accomplished burglar—his discovery and use of the Ring, his growing courage, and his unlikely role in events far greater than himself. Alongside Gandalf and the Eagles, his path becomes entangled in the conflict at Erebor and the Battle of Five Armies before he ultimately leaves adventure behind for the comforts of home. Durin’s Folk rallies Thorin Oakenshield and the Dwarves of the Iron Hills around the legacy of Erebor, the bonds of their people, and their struggle to reclaim and defend their ancestral home. Wilderland Alliance unites Thranduil’s Elves and the Men of Lake-town, bringing the strength and splendor of the realms of Elves and Men to Erebor as they contend for the fate of the Mountain and its treasure. Flies and Spiders unleashes the darker creatures of Mirkwood and Rhovanion, drawing together spiders, Wargs, bats, Orcs, and the many other dangers that stalk the wild places of Bilbo’s journey. The Gathering of Clouds descends beneath the Misty Mountains and into the depths of Erebor, bringing together the Goblins who infest the world below, the terrible might of Smaug, and the darker forces whose gathering ultimately threaten everyone at the Mountain. Together, these five Commander decks transform the characters, creatures, treasures, alliances, and conflicts of The Hobbit into a multiplayer Magic experience culminating in the Battle of Five Armies. As always, Deckcrafting is about finding the perfect home for every card—a deck that brings out the best in its mechanics while using those mechanics to faithfully represent the character, theme, or story behind the card. Rather than simply building the strongest decks possible, every card is considered for both what it does on the battlefield and what it represents within Tolkien’s world. The result is a collection of interconnected decks designed not only to play against one another, but to recreate the factions and stories of Middle-earth through Magic: The Gathering. Five armies. Five Commander decks. One battle for the fate of Erebor.
