In 1945, an entire room vanished off the face of the earth. Not a painting, not a statue — a full chamber of glowing amber panels, gold leaf, and mirrors, called the Eighth Wonder of the World.
Built in Prussia between 1701 and 1709, the Amber Room was gifted to Russia's Peter the Great in 1716 and installed in the Catherine Palace near St. Petersburg, where it grew to over 55 square meters holding more than six tons of amber. For 200 years it dazzled tsars and visitors alike.
Then came September 1941. Nazi soldiers dismantled the room panel by panel, packed it into crates, and shipped it to Königsberg Castle. It was last documented in January 1945, in a burning castle — and after the Red Army took the city that April, it was never seen again.
Destroyed in the bombing? Hidden in a mine? Sunk with a ship in the Baltic? Every theory has been chased for 80 years. None proven. A meticulous reconstruction was completed in 2003, but the original remains the greatest lost treasure of World War II.
