Bernard’s Watch S04E11 Time to Heal

A 1990’s/2000’s series on Children’s ITV about Bernard, a boy gifted a watch by a postman that has magical abilities. This was taken from a DVD that contains the whole series, not the master copies of the first 3 seasons, series 4 doesn’t seem to be around and yes there only seem to be Tv recordings if video but it preserves this great Carlton series in a time where tv was made in different regions and kids shows were made by 3 of the terrestrial networks. Bernard cut his arm badly after falling off his bicycle when he swerved to avoid a dog. The doctor stitched it up and tells him that he was going to have to keep it clean and dry for at least a week. Bernard's family is about to go on holiday the following day but there was nothing apart from swimming he wanted to do at the campsite. At home, Bernard decides to use his watch to stop time to allow his wound to heal before he goes on holiday. Bernard gets his own food, reads books and plays board games, pretending to be the other players as well, and only restarts time when it is necessary such as when he brushes his teeth. After his third sleep cycle, his wound is improving but he has used up everything worth eating and goes out to but more food. He smells a hot pizza and goes into a house. He cannot stop himself from eating all the pizza as he completes a thousand piece jigsaw puzzle. He leaves a note and some money to pay for the pizza and thinks it would help to wash his knife and plate. He restarts time to do this and as he does, the owner of the house finds him. The owner of the house, who later introduces himself as Jack Lithgow, notices the completed puzzle and does not think Bernard would have had time to complete it. Bernard then tells him about the watch, showing him move in frozen time, and his use of it to give his wound time to heal. Mr Lithgow thinks he might be able to help and shows him a room full of toys, explaining that he once earned his living from selling toys. He offers to let Bernard play with the toys and to cook his meals while the wound heals. At meal times, Bernard chats with Mr Lithgow about the watch. When the find the wound has healed, Bernard thinks Mr Lithgow's granddaughters would enjoy playing with his toys. Mr Lithgow then explains that the reason they do not come to his house is because he had an argument their mother long ago and some very wounding things were said. Bernard thanks him for everything he did and goes home. That night, Bernard's mother notices his arm has healed and sends him to the doctor the following morning. The doctor cannot believe it either and Mrs Beasley thinks that he must have healing powers in his hands remembering a programme she saw on the television. Before leaving for his holiday, Bernard passes Mr Lithgow's house and sees that he has reconciled with his daughter and granddaughters. Bernard leaves him a letter promising to send him a postcard and waves to him through the window.
