Two walks across Osaka, back to back — a market morning and a riverside night. The first begins inside the Osaka Municipal Central Wholesale Market at ten to six on a Tuesday: whole tuna on the block, band saws running, styrofoam stacked to the shoulder, turret trucks threading between the stalls. Out past the gates the route follows the Ajikawa east, through Noda and Fukushima as the shutters go up, and finishes among the elms of Utsubo Park — which was itself a fish market once. The second is the evening before. Along the Dojima River after eight, with Umeda standing lit across the water, west to Nakanoshima Banks, under the expressway viaduct, past Yodoyabashi and the red brick of the Central Public Hall, out to the tip of the island where the two rivers meet again, then through Semba to Midosuji and the crossing at Honmachi.
