This video shows how to replace the hard drive on one of these devices with an SD card adapter (a bit like a solid-state drive). But it seems that this device can't communicate with my adapter properly, because the computer reports that the device has 4 GB when it doesn't.
If you have a large-capacity SD card (32 GB is the closest size that is greater than or equal to the original 20 GB), and the device correctly identifies the capacity, you might be able to use dd to clone the entire original hard drive to the new one, bit by bit. But what if the original hard drive is broken? There doesn't seem to be a way to properly format a blank drive for use with this device.
It's easy to re-create the partitions, but the partition table must be special, since Linux can't see the seemingly standard FAT32 partitions in the original hard drive but Windows can.
I'm done wasting time with these failed devices that not even hackers want to support (I wish I had the knowledge to hack it, but I don't). I have better devices to listen to music or watch videos on. This device doesn't even have any sentimental value to me.
