More than half of the waterfront of Lake Ontario is bounded by Lake Shore Boulevard, a significant arterial road in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Before 1998, two stretches of Lake Shore Boulevard (from the Etobicoke-Mississauga border to the Humber River and from Leslie Street to Woodbine Avenue) were listed as being a part of Route 2. In between these two portions, the highway followed the Gardiner Expressway. Lake Shore crisscrosses parallel to and below the elevated stretch of the Gardiner Expressway in the downtown area. East of Yonge Street, it is known as Lake Shore Boulevard East. This stretch passes through areas that were once used for railroads and ports. Although the streets in this region were joined in the 1950s, they existed before Lake Shore Boulevard was given its name.
