Russia says it shot down 856 Ukrainian drones in a single night. By morning, the Slavneft refinery in Yaroslavl, one of the five largest in Russia, was on fire anyway. It was the fifth night in a row that Ukrainian drones hit Russia's oil industry: Novokuybyshevsk, Ufa, Kstovo, a Transneft pumping station near Samara, and then Yaroslavl, about 430 miles from Ukraine. We go through the night over Moscow, the fires in Yaroslavl, how Russia's "shot down" numbers work, why Ukraine keeps coming back to this one plant, and what five nights of strikes mean for Russia's fuel crisis and its war budget. Here, we explain. You decide. Subscribe. Data as of 3 November 2026. The 856 figure comes from Russia's Defense Ministry, the 493 drones toward Moscow from Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, and the 124 drones over Yaroslavl from Governor Mikhail Yevrayev; none of these numbers can be checked independently. The count of seven fires is from the independent Russian outlet Astra. Militarnyi's report that all main units at Novokuybyshevsk were knocked out could not be independently confirmed. The Samara pumping-station strike is reported, not officially confirmed. Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) says it has not proven a link between poor fuel and the Su-57 fire at Akhtubinsk. Drone prices are reported figures: about $55,000 for Fire Point's FP-1, and almost $200,000 per Shahed in 2023 according to hacked documents.
