In this rare historical footage, Odo Seikichi (Seikichi Odo, 1926–2002) demonstrates Gojushiho Ichi, a kata preserved within his Okinawa Kenpo curriculum and associated with the Kingai-Ryu tradition.
Odo Sensei was known for preserving an unusually extensive collection of Okinawan karate and kobudo kata. His martial arts education brought him into contact with several important Okinawan teachers and traditions, making footage of his kata particularly valuable for anyone interested in the development and transmission of Okinawan martial arts.
Gojushiho translates approximately as “54 Steps.” Odo's Gojushiho Ichi is especially interesting because it provides an opportunity to examine a version of the kata associated with the Kingai-Ryu influence within his broader Okinawa Kenpo curriculum.
When watching Odo Sensei's performance, pay particular attention to the stance and body alignment, hand positioning, changes in direction and angle, close-range movements, timing and rhythm, weight transfer, body mechanics, and transitions between techniques. It is also interesting to compare this performance with Gojushiho versions preserved in other Okinawan traditions.
Historical footage like this is extremely important because kata can change as it passes from one generation to another. Seeing an earlier practitioner perform the form allows today's martial artists to compare movement, posture, timing, mechanics and technical emphasis rather than relying entirely on modern interpretations.
Odo Sensei's legacy is particularly valuable because his curriculum represents the intersection of several important Okinawan martial traditions. Studying these older recordings helps us better understand not only what was practiced, but how these traditions were transmitted and preserved.
🙏 Special thanks to Sensei John Snyder for providing this historical video and helping make this valuable footage of Odo Seikichi available for martial artists, researchers and future generations to study and appreciate.
