1220 Bukhara: a Mongol leader enters the Great Friday Mosque and forces horses to eat from the city's sacred Korans.
This documentary examines the military phenomena that defined the Mongol conquest and the brutal reality of their expansion. By analyzing the choices made by a leader on the ground, we trace how such a decisive moment in Central Asian history reflects broader patterns of warfare and the tactical logic of the Mongol Empire. We look at the ancient art and maps that document these campaigns, providing a clear picture of how a single act of desecration signaled the end of a regional power.
Beyond the specific events in Bukhara, this film explores the systemic nature of historical conquest. We assess the evidence behind the military strategy and the psychological impact of these maneuvers, grounding the narrative in the physical records left behind by those who witnessed the collapse of their civilization.
Bukhara, spring 1220. Genghis Khan rides into the Friday mosque, and his horses eat from the cases that held the city's Qurans.
Temujin was born on the Onon River around 1162, and his own clan left his family to starve when he was a boy. This documentary follows how he became Genghis Khan: the borrowed army that won back his wife Borte, the break with Jamukha, the guard of ten thousand, the assembly of 1206, the fall of Zhongdu, and the caravan to Otrar that brought his army down on Bukhara, Samarkand, Urgench, Merv and Nishapur. He chose his commanders from strangers, and the one thing he couldn't settle was his own sons, Jochi and Chagatai. Within two generations his family ruled the largest land empire in history, and nobody alive today knows where he's buried.
