2 Thessalonians Complete: the persecuted apostle Paul’s most prophetic letter, explained verse by verse. Who is the “man of lawlessness”? What is holding back the darkness? Has the day of the Lord already come? And how should Christians live while they wait for the second coming of Jesus?
Only a few months after his first letter, Paul heard that someone was frightening the young church in Thessalonica with a message that the day of the Lord had already arrived. It may even have come in a letter forged in his name. Some believers were shaken, and some stopped working altogether. So from a workshop in Corinth, Paul wrote again. He wasn’t giving them a timetable for the end times. He was writing to steady people who were shaking.
In this full Bible study of 2 Thessalonians, we walk through all three chapters: the furnace of persecution, the fog of deception, and the workbench of everyday faithfulness. We look at the history behind the text, including Antiochus Epiphanes, Caligula’s statue for the temple in Jerusalem, the judgment seat of Gallio, and ancient papyrus letters. We also explain the key Greek words and what Jesus taught on the Mount of Olives. Then we follow what happened to the church in Thessalonica after the letter.
If you’re anxious about the news, suffering for doing what’s right, or simply tired of doing good, this letter was written for you. “But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.” (2 Thessalonians 3:3)
