The Ladder of Divine Ascent - Step 1: On Renunciation of the World

📖 St. John of the Ladder - Step 1: On Renunciation of the World | The Ladder of Divine Ascent In this first step of The Ladder of Divine Ascent, St. John Climacus lays the foundation for the spiritual journey by calling the Christian to renounce the world and its distractions for the sake of eternal life. With deep humility and spiritual wisdom, St. John explains what it means to turn away from earthly attachments and strive for purity of heart, self-denial, and the love of God. This teaching is not only for monks but for all who desire to follow Christ sincerely. St. John reminds us that the Christian life is a battle — a struggle against sin, passions, and temptations — but it begins with the firm decision to leave behind worldly attachments and live for God alone. In this step you will hear about: The different types of people in relation to God: friends, servants, the estranged, and enemies. What it means to truly renounce the world. The necessity of spiritual guidance. The struggle and hidden suffering of the early stages of spiritual life. The need for humility, simplicity, and daily perseverance. The three kinds of monastic life — and how even those in the world can apply these teachings. Though originally written for monastics, The Ladder of Divine Ascent offers timeless wisdom for all Christians seeking to ascend to God by way of humility, love, and spiritual discipline. 🔔 Subscribe for more Orthodox Christian reflections and teachings. 👍 If you found this video helpful, please like and share it. 💬 Leave a comment with your thoughts or questions.
