This time, I walked through the urban core and surrounding residential streets of Kashiwa City in Chiba Prefecture—documenting the extensive pedestrian networks, commercial character, and neighborhood transitions. Filmed on a clear afternoon in May 2026.
KASHIWA: THE URBAN HUB OF NORTHERN CHIBA
Kashiwa City, situated in the northwestern part of Chiba Prefecture, functions as a major regional commercial and transportation hub, often referred to as one of the key satellite centers of the Greater Tokyo Area. Developed rapidly mid-20th century alongside the JR Joban Line, the city presents a high-density urban environment directly connected to central Tokyo, balancing bustling commercial districts with established suburban residential zones.
KASHIWA STATION PEDESTRIAN DECK & URBAN CORE
The walk highlights Kashiwa Station's multi-level pedestrian deck system, which was one of the earliest large-scale elevated pedestrian networks implemented in Japan. This infrastructure efficiently separates foot traffic from vehicular roads, directing commuters into a dense concentration of retail complexes, including the Kashiwa Takashimaya Station Mall, and deep commercial alleys radiating from the east and west exits.
COMMERCIAL ALLEYS & LOCAL SHOPPING STREETS
The route moves through the narrow commercial arteries extending from the station area. These streets feature a distinct mix of individual clothing boutiques, specialized cafes, and traditional dining establishments operating underneath modern low-rise buildings. The spatial layout reflects Japan's mid-century suburban retail development, showing a steady and authentic rhythm of daily pedestrian activity.
RESIDENTIAL TRANSITIONS & SUBURBAN CHARACTER
Away from the immediate station plaza, the walk transitions into the quiet residential quarters of Kashiwa. The environment shifts sharply from high-density commercial facades to narrow, well-maintained streets lined with single-family homes, low-rise apartments, and pocket green spaces. This clear contrast represents the standard living layout for Tokyo's commuter towns—combining urban accessibility with quiet neighborhood environments.
WHY WALK KASHIWA
This route captures the genuine structural reality of Kashiwa—moving from the heavy concrete infrastructure of a major transit station to the quiet, unembellished residential streets where local families live. The 60-minute journey presents the city as a functional, living urban organism rather than a curated tourist destination.
