Alberobello Walking Tour 4K - Puglia Italy - The Iconic Town of the Trulli

The town that was built so it could be taken apart. Alberobello sits in the Valle d'Itria, in Puglia, in the heel of Italy. Around 10,000 people live here, and more than 1,500 of its buildings are trulli: round limestone houses with conical roofs, put together without a drop of mortar. The technique itself is ancient — dry-stone building goes back thousands of years across the Mediterranean. What happened here is that somebody made it compulsory. From 1481 the land belonged to the Acquaviva d'Aragona, counts of Conversano, and under a law of the Kingdom of Naples, the Pragmatica de Baronibus, a lord who founded a new settlement owed tribute to the Spanish Viceroy. So the Count ordered his settlers to build without mortar. A house held together by nothing but its own weight can be pulled down in a hurry, and a town that isn't there cannot be taxed. That ended on 27 May 1797, when Ferdinand IV of Bourbon made Alberobello a royal city and freed it from feudal service. The first town council adopted the name a few weeks later. From then on people were allowed to use mortar — and mostly stopped building trulli.
