This game is a good metroidvania, bus as a Castlevania game it's not exactly what I wanted. I'm not saying it's a bad Castlevania game, just not the kind of Castlevania I prefer. It's different from the previous games and is closer in gameplay to Dead Cells, Blasphemous or Hollow Knight.
I prefer something closer to Koji Igarashi's CV's, like Aria of Sorrow or Portrait of Ruin. Oh well. I guess there's still IGA's Bloodstained series for that. And either way I'm glad these series are back.
In short, that I didn't like: deadcellification of the combat, super meat boy buzzsaw platforming and music, aside from a few tracks.
What I liked: exploration, whip mechanics and boss battles.
------------------
Some facts about the first Death battle:
You can't win this fight, no matter what you do.
The unfair attack at the end can be mostly dodged with the right timing, except there is one vertical slash (the one that hit me) that has no warning and just appears at your position. You can't avoid it.
The slashes can't be blocked with Joan's shield and ignore the Family's Grace relic (the one that protects you from one attack every 60 seconds).
It also deals insane amount of damage. With 0.2x damage taken multiplier you still die in one hit. With 0.1x you'll survive with a sliver of health.
You can survive this attack and "defeat" Death if you set the damage taken multiplier to 0. Death will continue to spam the unfair attack. There's no point doing this, as you will instantly die and lose as soon as you deplete Death's health.
------------------
I have the custom mode on so I could respawn in front of the boss rooms and die faster if I get hit.
For the relics I only used the damage boosting ones in some of the battles.
