Ep 333 Peacewarts: Morphological Peace 101 – The Biggest Morph: 100% Disarmament (Class 14) In our final class in Morphological Peace, we examine the difference between a system that is stable and one that is merely frozen. Drawing on C.S. Holling's work on resilience and the rigidity trap, Charles Perrow's normal accident theory, and Thomas Schelling's own account of why deterrence depends on human hesitation, we look at what happens when machine-speed decision-making removes the slack from the nuclear architecture. Using John Wesley Powell's rejected watershed commonwealths and the Colorado River Compact that followed, a century of American fire suppression and the megafires it produced, and South Africa's dismantling of its own nuclear arsenal, we explore how frozen forms can be deliberately unwound rather than left to shatter. Homework: 1. Search "South Africa nuclear weapons dismantled." Note how long it took and who verified it. 2. Write down one question about any of this episode's topics. If you don't have a question, write 'no question.' 3. Optional: Find out what watershed you live in, and journal about what you would decide together with the people in it. Books: Resilience Thinking by Brian Walker and David Salt, Command and Control by Eric Schlosser, and The Abolition by Jonathan Schell. Learning Topics: Stable versus Frozen; The Rigidity Trap; Command and Control Pathology; Normal Accidents; Decision-Time Compression; Meaningful Human Control; The Colorado River Compact; Watershed Governance; South African Disarmament.
