Meet the Coppersmith Barbet - a small, colourful green barbet with a striking red forehead and breast, and one of the most familiar barbet species in India. 🐦🌿
India is home to 9 species of barbets:
Great Barbet
Brown-headed Barbet
Lineated Barbet
White-cheeked Barbet
Golden-throated Barbet
Blue-throated Barbet
Blue-eared Barbet
Malabar Barbet
Coppersmith Barbet
The Coppersmith is widely distributed across India. It is mainly an arboreal bird, living wherever there are trees, including forests, orchards, gardens, wooded areas and even urban environments. It feeds largely on fruits and berries, particularly figs.
It is found across much of India, from the Himalayan foothills to southern India, although it is less common or absent in some of the drier north-western regions.
And its famous “tuk-tuk-tuk” call sounds remarkably like a coppersmith hammering metal — which is where its name comes from. 🔨🐦
