What does “custom” actually mean when you're talking about a pair of boots? I sat down with Adam Lane Olsen of Peter Limmer & Sons in Intervale, New Hampshire for a long conversation about something that's becoming increasingly rare: making footwear around the person instead of asking the person to adapt to the footwear. We get into the difference between custom fit, made-to-measure, and truly bespoke footwear, along with how Limmer builds a boot around the shape of your foot, your body, and what you're actually going to use it for. Adam walks through how measurements, foot tracings, the old-school Harris Mat, custom lasts, leather selection, midsoles, stitching, arch support, and even the weight of the boot all come together. More importantly, we talk about the judgment and experience behind those decisions, because simply making something heavier, thicker, or more expensive doesn't necessarily make it better. That's probably what I appreciate most about Limmer. They aren't trying to make every possible kind of boot for every possible customer. They've spent generations figuring out what works, and they're willing to tell you when something doesn't make sense. We also get into the strange intersection between craftsmanship and art: the point where measurements and specifications stop being enough and experience takes over.
