THE REAL DIRT IS IN THE MIND

THE REAL DIRT IS IN THE MIND. Nairobi’s streets collected 30 tonnes of solid waste in a single day. More than 1,000 young people came together in Roysambu, clearing litter, unclogging drainage systems and planting over 5,000 trees along the Thika Road corridor to mark Mazingira Day. But beyond the brooms, gloves and seedlings, there was a bigger message: a clean city begins with a change of mindset. When we litter and expect someone else to clean up, we become part of the problem. When we take responsibility for our surroundings, we become part of the solution. Organised by the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) in partnership with the Nairobi City County Government, the exercise brought together WeCan Academy students and community members to turn environmental responsibility into action. Because cleaning Nairobi is not just about removing the dirt we see. It is about confronting the mindset that puts it there in the first place. The real dirt is in the mind. And the change must begin with us.
