What We Need to Grow · Ep. 047
Patty Bowman Kingsley is a painter and arts leader based in Bowmanville, Ontario, CEO of CreateGood Inc. and administrative director of a Canadian arts charity. She studied painting and drawing at OCAD University, was elected to public office at twenty-one, and has spent the years since working the seam between a studio practice and the civic structures that decide whether art reaches anyone. She is two years into a master's at York University researching the leadership model she has now put into the field.
In this Founder Talk conversation with Caleb Pedosiuk, Patty states her thesis without hedging, that creativity and connection transform culture everywhere and every time, and then spends the conversation explaining how she is trying to prove it wrong. She recruited people outside her sector, including people she describes as diametrically opposed to her, to assess her own leadership, because she is not living her life to serve the people already in the room. She explains the objection she has to her own effect, which is that it might be attached to one personality and therefore unrepeatable, and describes the three-part model and the deliberately loose teaching method she built to find out. She walks through a painting called Mending a Nation that functions as a distribution mechanism rather than a product: five hundred donors, two prints each, one kept and one carried into a Member of Parliament's office, a petition target of one percent of the country, and an original that will never be sold and can only be gifted. She is precise about why she let that one go. And she explains how an invitation that comes from a specific conviction is built to be accepted by people who do not share it.
Patty is exactly the kind of founder, innovator, and problem solver this series exists to put a light on. She holds a conviction as strongly as anyone on this show has held one, and her response to holding it is to submit it for testing and to hand the marking to her critics. Authority is earned by building things worth talking about, and an honest account of that work is what makes a brand understood, trusted, and findable by the systems people now ask for answers.
