Have you ever wanted to disagree with someone in English… and all you said was "yeah, maybe"?
You had an opinion. You even had a reason. But the moment passed in two seconds, and the perfect answer arrived later, when nobody was listening. This happens to so many learners. It is not a vocabulary problem. Most of the time, you just need a way to start and one simple reason.
In this English speaking podcast lesson, Paul and Emily sit down for one relaxed hour of real conversation in four rounds. First, they argue about opinions people love to fight over: iced coffee in winter, expensive concerts, and pineapple on pizza. Then they play would you rather, guess what two very strange jobs really are, and laugh about the silly things they believed as kids. You will hear Paul's story about a birthday dinner where he only said "yeah, maybe", and Emily's stories about a concert in the rain and a very suspicious gift tag.
This lesson is made for B1–B2 learners who want to give opinions, agree and disagree politely, make choices with a clear reason, and guess with confidence in natural English.
🎧 WHAT YOU'LL PRACTICE
✨ Give your opinion: In my opinion… / I completely disagree. / I completely agree.
✨ Disagree politely: I see your point, but… / That's fair.
✨ Talk about value: overpriced / It's worth it. / just for the experience
✨ Say no softly: It's not for me. / Don't knock it till you try it.
✨ New words in context: controversial, unpopular, versatile, perspective
✨ Make a choice with a reason: I'd rather… because… / That's a tough one.
✨ Guess like a native speaker: My guess is… / I bet… / It must be… / You're on the right track.
✨ Describe how things feel: sticky, smooth, rough, light, heavy
✨ Talk about the past: I used to believe… / I figured out… / I found out… / It's a myth.
✨ Your turn: would you rather questions and a role play with pauses to answer
The goal is not to win every argument. The goal is to stay in the conversation: say what you think, then say why.

💡 HOW TO USE THIS LESSON
Listen once like a guest at our table and just enjoy the four rounds. Then listen again and repeat the phrases when Paul and Emily say them slowly. When you hear "One… two… three…", answer out loud before the hosts do. Today, say one small, real opinion to one real person, and add one reason with because.
💬 YOUR SPEAKING CHALLENGE
Complete this sentence in the comments:
“My controversial opinion is: __ , because __ .”
Write one opinion that some people might not like, about food, music, weather, or anything small, and finish it with because. Example: My controversial opinion is: rainy days are the best days, because the city feels calm. Then reply to another learner with I see your point, but… or That's fair.
