Sottoriva Spiral Mixer Repair - Hard Chroming, Bearing Replacement & Hydraulic Leaks!

In this video we repair a 250L Sottoriva spiral mixer. It has been sent to us from a large bakery in Scotland who found us through another video we had posted to YouTube. The customer had a local engineering company attempt to replace the spiral shaft seal which was leaking gearbox oil - however they informed us that after the seal had been replaced along with the bearings they were loosing about a pint of oil overnight! They also advised there was a hydraulic oil leak which they were unable to trace. This machine is a tilting mixer which means the bowl is on wheels and can be rolled away from the machine - the whole head lifts into the air to allow the bowl to pass beneath the spiral. This makes extraction of the dough much easier and the bowl can be rolled to your workstation ready for dividing etc. We took the decision to have this shaft hard chromed rather than metal spray in-house due to the longevity that hard chrome is renowned for. This machine being from Scotland and us in the South of England means it is impractical to carry out any remedial work should the metal spray fail. While it's uncommon it can happen particularly when used in applications with heavy loads. Hard chrome is the ultimate solution for shaft repairs. Ultimately, the machine has had the following: • Thorough cleaning of motor & hydraulic compartment. • Shaft hard chromed and finish ground to tolerance. • Full bearing and seal replacement. • Thorough cleaning of gearbox. • Replacement hydraulic hoses 2No. • Resealed and painted hydraulic ram. • 10L of EP 460 gear oil.
